Cambridge Energy Resources to build 5MW Grid Connected Solar PV Power Plant in the state of Orissa, India
Cambridge, MA February 17, 2010:Cambridge Energy Resources (CER), a Cambridge Energy Group Company, today announced that state level technical committee (STC), headed by the secretary, science and technology (S&T) department of the Orissa government, has approved its 5 MW Grid Connected Solar (PV) power projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission launched by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy sources (MNRE).
CER’s plant will be located in Chatrapur area in Ganjam District of Orissa, the first in this area. This area is a fast growing industrial zone next to the Gopalpur port where many of the big industrial groups such as TATA Steel & the Saraf Group have planned to create SEZ’s. Indian Rare Earth Limited is running a heavy mineral plant in the vicinity. Many small and medium scale industries are also fast emerging in the area. Speaking on the occasion Mr Bhaskar Panigrahi, Chairman of the CER group mentioned that “All these growth initiatives require a huge amount of energy, so a good reliable supply of power would be highly necessary. A solar plant in the vicinity will not only augment the energy need for these industries, but also fulfill Orissa government’s commitment to clean energy production.” CER has already procured the required land for the plant and is in advanced stages of finalizing the technical aspects of the project as well.
Overseas Indian Facilitation Center (OIFC) reported that “Orissa attracted massive investments mainly due to the availability of large reserves of rich mineral resources such as coal and iron ore along with cheap manpower. Steel and power were among the sectors which attracted maximum investments in the state. Orissa is now becoming the toast of infrastructure majors. While Korean major, Posco, has already gone ahead with its expansion plans in steel in the state, Aditya Birla is planning to set up US$ 217.27 million aluminum downstream project. Renewable energy investments are also being planned in the state.”
